Issues Raised, Lessons Learned, and Potential Strategies for Dual-Use Research in the Life Sciences: The H5N1 Research Controversy – A Workshop
On May 1, 2012, The National Academies will host a public workshop in Washington, DC to discuss the implications of the H5N1 avian influenza research controversy and provide a forum wherein the concerns and interests of the broader community of stakeholders, including policy makers, biosafety and biosecurity experts, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and the general public may be articulated. The workshop will feature the following sessions:
– The Ongoing Revolution in the Life Sciences and Associated Technologies
– Two Case Studies from Conceptualization to Dissemination of Findings with Consideration of Plausible Points of Intervention and Decision-Making
– Roundtable Discussion on the Nature of the Social Contract
– Roundtable Discussion on Governance, Oversight, and the Path Forward
The workshop is being organized by CSTL, the Board on Life Sciences, and the Forum on Microbial Threats with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
