The Forum on Microbial Threats
“On March 14 – 15, 2011, the IOM’s Forum on Microbial Threats will convene a public workshop to explore the scientific and policy dimensions of recent developments in genetic engineering and their applications to emerging infectious diseases. Through invited presentations and discussions, this workshop will explore how the use of these advanced technologies will yield insights and greater understanding of infectious microbes, the mechanisms by which they cause disease; the applications of these tools and approaches for disease detection and diagnostic platforms; and the development of new therapeutics, vaccines and other infectious disease intervention technologies.”
