Biotechnology enables societies to address a variety of national priorities, including preventing and responding to biological threats (natural, accidental, or intentional). Scientific collaboration is vital to foster continued advances in the biological sciences and to address national priorities. Furthermore, such cooperation facilitates the creation of shared principles and standards of practice to minimize the risks associated with biological research.

The AAAS Center for Science, Technology, and Security Policy (CSTSP) initiated a series of meetings and workshops in the Middle East and North Africa, including Afghanistan and Pakistan (BMENA region), to examine critical issues pertaining to international collaboration in the biological sciences. Ms. Gwenaële Coat will cover CSTSP activities in the region and share some insights and conclusions from the event series.

Dr. Chen Kane works to reduce the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism in the Middle East. She will give us her views on the subject in light of broader nonproliferation and other issues in the region.
