Synthetic Biology III Workshop
Safe and Secure Science: Partners of Today and Tomorrow

Workshop Goals and Objectives

  1. – To provide a forum for academia, industry, amateur biology communities and other stakeholders to discuss synthetic biology and emergent biotechnology issues with representatives from the United States Government;
  2. – To share information among industry, academia, amateur biology communities, and other stakeholders;
  3. – To identify roles and responsibilities of the U.S. Government and stakeholder communities related to the prevention and mitigation of biological terrorism;
  4. – To identify opportunities to improve biosecurity among stakeholder communities based on current and future trends in the areas of synthetic biology and emergent biotechnologies;
  5. – To solicit information from stakeholder communities in the areas of synthetic biology and emergent biotechnologies to inform the creation of United States Government policies and guidance with the goal of maximizing safety and security while fostering progress in the biological sciences;
  6. – To provide FBI with insight into the current states and potential future trends in synthetic biology and emergent biotechnologies to enable the FBI to better protect and defend the U.S. against misuse of these technologies; and
  7. – To identify capabilities of the synthetic biology and biotechnology communities that can be applied to support global health security.
