Venue:
Willard Straight Theatre
Address:
Cornell University, Ithaca, 14853

Slava Paperno, director of the Russian Language Program and Kathleen Vogel, associate professor, Science & Technology Studies, will present “The Anthrax Diaries,” a 30-minute documentary that explores the social and ethical context of weapon-making. The film explores the research and development of biological weapons in the Soviet Union. It focuses in particular on some of the ways in which the lives of the scientists, who had been trained as doctors and therefore had taken the Hippocratic Oath, were affected by their deadly work.

Paperno has produced several documentaries centered around cross-cultural issues. His work on this film is in collaboration with Kathleen Vogel, Department of Science and Technology Studies and Judith Reppy Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, Sonia Ben Ouagraham-Gormley, assistant professor, Biodefense Program at George Mason University, and Slawomir Grunberg, Emmy Award winning filmmaker and graduate of the Polish Film School in Lodz. The filmscreening will be introduced by Kathleen Vogel and a brief discussion will follow.
